Hazardous Unions: Two Tales of a Civil War Christmas
By Alison Bruce and Kat Flannery

  • Imajin Books
  • ISBN: 1927792320 (Trade paperback)
  • ASIN: B00EXA735I (Kindle)

Twin sisters separated by war, bound by love...

After the death of their father, twin sisters Maggie and Matty Becker are forced to take positions with officers' families at a nearby fort. When the southern states secede, the twins are separated, and they find themselves on opposite sides of America's bloodiest war.

In the south, Maggie travels with the Hamiltons to Bellevue, a plantation in west Tennessee. When Major Hamilton is captured, it is up to Maggie to hold things together and deal with the Union cavalry troop that winters at Bellevue. Racism, politics and a matchmaking stepmother test Maggie's resourcefulness as she fights for Bellevue, a wounded Confederate officer and the affections of the Union commander.

In the north, Matty discovers an incriminating letter in General Worthington's office, and soon she is on the run. With no one to turn to for help, she drugs the wealthy Colonel Cole Black and marries him, in hopes of getting the letter to his father, the governor of Michigan. But Cole is not happy about being married, and Matty's life becomes all about survival.

Two unforgettable stories of courage, strength and honor

  • Gold Mountain by Alison Bruce

There's more than one way to mine for gold, as May Travers well knows, and Marshal Ben Jessup is about to find out.

Papa staked his claim near Three Creeks, Oregon, but Mama panned more gold out of the miners' laundry than he ever found. Now I was mining the refuse heap behind the Gold Mountain Saloon. Not much gold, but tin, rag and wood also had value. "Can I help you, Miss Travers?"
    Oh no.
I brushed my hands off on my skirt and turned.
"Good evening, Marshal. Lovely evening isn't it? The moonlight looks particularly lovely over..." I looked around to find the moon. " ...over the outhouse."
He gave a snort of laughter but he had his stern face on by the time he reached me. At least I think he did. It was hard to tell with his face being in the shadow of his Stetson.
"This is no place for a lady to be wandering around alone in the dark."

The Shorts Series
Holiday Shorts, Valentine Shorts, Summer Shorts and more

Mystery, romance and humour with a seasonal theme from bestselling authors, award winning short story writers and talented new-comers. . .

It started in 2012. With the number of short story markets dwindling, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Besides, it was a way of getting content over the holidays without working too hard.

Okay, the last part didn't work out so well because I started doing illustrations for each story. Plus, it got so popular, I was posting more often. On the other hand, it was more fun than I anticipated.

Check out the Shorts Page for links to the stories.
